Facing Out Laying Low

by Norman White

Facing Out Laying Low is a microcomputer-controlled, interactive robot. It surveys its surroundings from a fixed point, and responds to activity it finds "interesting" with a variety of audio responses (the first version employed coded brownian trills, while later versions used synthesized voice).

Over the sixteen years since its origin, it has gone through six major hardware/software revisions, and is still evolving towards its intended perceptual subtlety: self-adjusted thresholds, educated guesses, etc. Never the less it demonstrates a surprising array of behaviors and in spite of it's lack of anthropomorphic appearance seems to exhibit "personality".
