Victoria Scott
Victoria Scott has made a mark on the Toronto new media scene since graduating from O.C.A. in 1991. In that time she has been very active in creating and exhibiting both graphic and sculptural work. Her influence on the community has been felt also through her organization of group shows and frequent involvement in artist-in-the-schools programs.
She says of her work "Recently, my artwork and research has centered
around using vibration and resonance as a power source to create machines
and tools that are driven by female sexual energy. I feel that vibration
and resonance are the most powerful elements to understanding female driven
technology. If engine acceleration, motors, and propulsion can all be used
as metaphors to describe the linear force and power of male sexuality,
then all vibration, from female bass players to physic energy to vibrators
could be the technological expression of women's sexual and emotional power."
Her piece "Coil Room" embodies these cycles and resonances in both form and function. A 500 sq. ft. area is filled by 15 inverted steel spirals four feet across. At one end of the room is a slowly rotating three foot copper disk chemically imprinted with a vulvic image. This rotation determines the period of the piece's cycle. At a certain point in the turning of the disk a circuit is closed and eccentricly weighted motors attached to coils are activated causing the coils to subtly vibrate. The work impresses upon all the senses as if to induce a sympathetic resonance in the viewer.
